New River Vacation Rental

Dove Cottage II Vacation Rental is situated on the gently sloping bank of the North Fork of the New River in northern Ashe County, NC, a short distance from the Virginia border off Highway 16 and 5 minutes from the famous River House restaurant. It is approximately 10 miles north of Jefferson and 14 miles from the West Jefferson Arts District, where Broomfields Art and Antiques Gallery is located.

The New River is the oldest river in the United States and one of the few which flow north. After leaving Virginia, it passes through West Virginia, where it is known as the Kanawha, and thence into the Ohio River at Belpre, OH, 13 miles south of Marietta.

 

Retreat to Dove Cottage

Well-appointed and spacious (1220 sq. ft.), Dove Cottage II will appeal to the sophisticated traveler and is the perfect getaway for two or great for a small family. Designed, built and furnished by Julia Bishop, IIDA, this contemporary cottage is open and airy. The living / dining / kitchen area features a cathedral ceiling and is simply, but tastefully furnished with plenty of comfortable seating, a Flat Screen TV with DVD, and a gas-log stove. A French door leads to the large porch which offers a magnificent view of the New River and surrounding hills. The bright and cheery kitchen is completely equipped for preparing meals. There are two bedrooms and two baths, one en suite with stall shower and the other with tub/shower. Both bedrooms contain 4-poster, queen-size beds, and one has a window seat.

Dove Cottage II is owned and operated by Julia and Bill Bishop, formerly of Houston and Asheville. Julia is a practicing interior designer with more than 40 years' experience. Bill is a consulting petroleum geologist, prior to which he had 30 years' experience with large companies in Houston, Shreveport and Calgary.

The Bishops are graduates of Miami University in Ohio and have been collecting art andantiques for 50 years. They operated a shop at their B & B (Broomfields) in Central Texasfrom 1993-99 and showed at the semi-annual Round Top (Texas) Antiques Show. They are the owners of Broomfields Gallery in West Jefferson, which features well-known local and other artists, carvers, and photographers; quality antiques and collectibles; selected gift items; and The Gambit - Interior Design.

Bill and Julia are also members of the National Committee for the New River and belong to the River Builder Program, which works to stabilize eroding river and stream banks in the New River watershed. Banks are re-vegetated with silky dogwood live-stakes and other native plants, which quickly develop extensive root systems to help hold banks in place and create riparian buffers. Stream bank stabilization protects property by preventing further erosion and protects water quality by significantly reducing sedimentation into the river. This is whythe surrounding banks are not mowed back. A launching access is located at the end of the mowed path.
